Mainland, Free Zone or Offshore: Understanding the Differences
A general comparison of the three main UAE company structures and the considerations that typically guide the choice between them.
Mainland companies
Mainland companies are typically associated with businesses that want to operate across the broader UAE market. Activity, authority and office considerations all play a role, and requirements vary by emirate and activity type.
Free zone companies
Free zones offer zone-specific licensing, foreign-ownership options and flexi-desk or office choices, often within industry-focused ecosystems. Trading directly within the mainland may involve additional considerations.
Offshore companies
Offshore structures are generally used for international business structuring, asset holding and international trading. They do not assume direct UAE mainland trading rights, and banking and compliance considerations remain important.
